Once upon a time many great rishis/hermit/sages were conducting an important at the Mandarachal mountain. The great rishis/hermit/sages were arguing about themselves which of the three Gods should be considered as the presiding deity of that yajna. When they could not arrive at the conclusion, they all gave the task to rishis/hermit/sages Bhrigu to test the three Gods and decide who should be considered as the presiding deity of the yajna.
In order to test the three Gods, rishis/hermit/sages Bhrigu first went to Kailash the abode of God Shankar. Then Shiva was spending time with His wife Sati, so Nandi and other guards did not allow him to meet Shiva. Rishis/hermit/sages Bhrigu got angry and cursed Shiva to be worshiped in phallic form.
After this event, rishi/hermit/sages Bhrigu went to Brahmalok. Brahmadev was busy in conversation with other Gods and he forgot to greet the great rishis/hermit/sages Bhrigu, properly or even offer him a place to sit. Rishis/hermit/sages Bhrigu got extremely angry and cursed Brahmadev that he will not be worshipped.
Thus, already filled with anger, the rishi/hermit/sages Bhrigu went to Vaikunthlok to meet Shri Vishnu. Shri Vishnu was sleeping at that time and did not see rishi/hermit/sages Bhrigu when he arrived. Rishi/hermit/sages Bhrigu in a fit of rage kicked Shri Vishnu on his chest. The kick woke Shri Vishnu however instead of getting angry at him, Shri Vishnu started massaging the great rishi/hermit/sages’ foot and asked if his foot is hurt because of his strong chest. This behaviour melted all the anger of rishi/hermit/sages Bhrigu and he decided to select Shri Vishnu as the presiding deity of the great yajna and be widely worshipped for his kind behaviour.
There is a famous saying about this incident, which goes something like this, "Elders should forgive, while young ones make mischief. What Shri Vishnu had to lose, even if rishi/hermit/sages Bhrigu kicked him."
The act of Shri Vishnu teaches us a great lesson, that in our day to day life when we confront a situation where the other person is wrong or is in a situation of anger, and the person is forgiven for his/her mistake, then a lot of great things can happen only due to the act of forgiveness.
